Wii Blamed for Japanese Arcade Shutdowns
It’s all fun and games until someone loses an arcade. It seems that Japanese manufacturers Namco and Sega will be reducing the number of arcades in Japan due to the Wii’s popularity.
Namco alone plans to shut down anywhere between fifty to sixty arcades, which is roughly 20%! Meanwhile, Sega is planning to shutdown 100 arcades!
While Sega did not point the finger at the Wii, Namco spokesman, Yuji Machida, had this to say on the subject, “Many Japanese kids got a Wii last year, particularly over the holiday season, and it seems as if much of their pocket money is now being saved to buy more hardware or software for the console.”
So we can assume that Sega is suffering from Wii’s popularity as well. Hopefully, arcades will go back in style soon so we don’t lose anymore.
