The popularity of the Wii continues to soar everywhere, and Canada is no exception. Taking a two-to-one lead over its nearest competitor, the Wii has reached 986,200 units sold, and the number continues to climb, inching it toward the one million mark.
Consumers snapped up some 318,000 units of the innovative game console in the first six months of 2008, bringing total Wii unit sales in Canada to 986,200, according to the NPD Group which tracks the video game industry. An NPD spokesman said he expected the Wii to surpass one million when the July figures come in.
Next time, you may be able to take your blood pressure with your Wii Remote. A patent for a Wii Remote add-on that can be used to measure the blood pressure, pulse, and body temperature of the gamer in question is found. We look forward to have a WiiDoc or WiiNurse next in the Wii(insertsomethinghere) line.

John Riccitiello, EA’s Chief Executive Officer, admitted that the company made a mistake when they underestimated the popularity of the Wii. The company threw their energies and attentions on the over-hyped PS3 and Xbox 360, ignoring the little console that could.
In an interview with Mercury News the CEO stated:
“The cycle is a lot like the past. There is a lot of innovation, probably more this cycle than even the last cycle; a lot of growth; a lot of exciting things. And we can choose to take advantage of those things. One thing that’s different is we typically figured out who the market leader was going to be before the start of the cycle and bet with our development resources on that platform. We made the wrong call there (by betting on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360), which made this transition harder than it would otherwise be. But now we’re catching up, and I think we’re fine. We’ve got some incredibly innovative Wii titles, incredibly innovative DS titles coming. And so I think that issue’s sort of behind us.”
The good news for both EA and Wii lovers is that the Wii’s popularity is commanding attention - at least for the time being.
“Right now, you’re seeing an increased emphasis on Wii and DS titles, so we can drive a market on Wii and DS that’s similar to what we have on the Xbox 360 and PS3. If we are successful there - and we will be - over the course of this and next year, it doesn’t matter to me which platform prevails,” he continued. “This cycle is like every other cycle before it: There’s been a dominant player (in this case, the Wii). Unusual in this cycle is there’s a second and third place that is meaningful, against which we can build a profitable business. That’s a good and positive thing.”
More games for the Wii is always a positive thing. Let’s keep them coming!
The Wii incarnation of once-Xbox-360-exclusive, Dead Rising, is called Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop. I can expect my hand, arm and brain feeling pretty tired after intense chopping and slashing tons of zombies.
Goosebumps, a popular children’s book title from Scholastic, is coming to the Nintendo Wii as Goosebumps Horrorland where players can enjoy thirty out-of-this-world rides and attractions. Strictly speaking, this Wii game is for Goosebumps fanatics only. Out in October for $39.99.
I remembered that I spent a lot of days on Animal Crossing: Wild World for the DS. Chasing fireflies, listening to KK Slider or digging everywhere with my trusty shovel. I believe that Animal Crossing: City Folk for the Nintendo Wii will be another no goal, no end simulation game but don’t we just love it?
Besides the possibilty of getting a Mii makeover in the city salon, WiiSpeak is also used to let folks to chat and communicate in-game.
New gadgets are coming out for the Wii. For instance, the WiiSpeak is a microphone that allows one to chat and communicate in the game. The first game announced that goes with this Wii accessory is Animal Crossing: City Folk.
With the new WiiSpeak microphone, it’s like you’re all in the same room. The microphone sits atop the sensor bar and picks up the conversation of everyone in the room to encourage a more inclusive experience.
Nintendo has released the new trailer for their upcoming Wii game Wario Land: Shake It. I don’t know about you, but I think it looks like a ton of fun. Looking forward to trying it out with the Wii Remote!
